Meet Mrs. Kwok (张老师)
你好nǐ hǎo!! (means "Hello" in Chinese)
My name is Erika Kwok. I grew up and was educated in Hong Kong, China. I earned my bachelor degree of Journalism and Communication in Hong Kong, China. I worked as a journalist and publicist after I graduated. About twelve years ago, I got married and moved to Michigan and now live in Troy with my two children (Noelle, 9 and Noah, 7). A few years ago, I went back to Wayne State University and earned my Master of Arts in Teaching. I started my teaching career back in 2014 at Shrine Catholic School.
In class, all my students always call me "zhāng lǎo shī " which means Teacher Cheung in Chinese. You might be thinking, "why do students call you Teacher Cheung when your last name is Kwok?" Well in China, we don't change our last name after we get married and "Cheung" (zhāng in Mandarin) is my maiden name.
Last summer, I went back to my hometown with Noelle and Noah to visit my family. I was lucky enough to a travel few Asian countries during my stay in Hong Kong. Going up to the 8th tallest buildings in the world and the 2nd tallest tower in the world, visiting museums in different countries and interact with different people with different culture background were great memories made as a family!!
This year is my third year teaching in Berkley School District. I am very excited to be part of Berkley Community again this year.
